Diplomats continue to sign condolence book in honour of Raila Odinga

The State Department for Foreign Affairs has announced that more diplomats continue to visit its headquarters in Nairobi to sign the condolence book in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a statement seen by People Daily on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the Ministry extended its gratitude to the outside world for honouring the departed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, who died on Wednesday, October 15 and was buried on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

”The Ministry acknowledges the heartfelt messages of sympathy and solidarity extended by members of the diplomatic corps during this period of national mourning,” the statement read in part.

On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, among those who signed were Ambassador Gisele Fernandez of Mexico, Ernest Ksora, Chargé d’Affaires of the South African High Commission, and Ambassador. Guo Haiyan of the People’s Republic of China and Ambassador T.B.H. Witjaksono Adji of Indonesia, who conveyed their country’s condolences to the Government and people of Kenya and paid tribute to Mr Odinga’s enduring legacy of leadership and democracy.

Condolences at State House

Meanwhile, the State also opened the condolence book for mourners to pay their last tributes to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India.

Shortly after leading the nation in public viewing of Raila Odinga’s body at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, President William Ruto rushed to the State House, Nairobi, to open the signing of the condolence book on Thursday evening, October 16, 2025. This is one among other activities laid out by the government to reflect on the life and times of Raila Odinga.

Earlier, Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta united at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive the remains of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, marking a rare moment of national unity amid grief. The Kenya Airways flight carrying Odinga’s body touched down a few minutes past 9:30 a.m, drawing large crowds of mourners, supporters, and well-wishers who had gathered to pay their respects.

On Monday, October 20, 2025, former president Uhuru Kenyatta was seen at the grave of the late Raila Odinga in Bondo, Siaya County, condoling with the family of the departed, a day after the burial.
