Detectives nab bhang valued at Sh11 million, trafficker arrested
Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in the coast region have apprehended a drug trafficker and seized bhang worth more than Sh11 million.
The detectives revealed that they found seven green gunny sacks containing long khaki rolls of bhang weighing 389.45 kilograms with an estimated street value of Sh11,683,500.
Acting on a tip-off, the detectives swiftly embarked on an operation along Samburu-Kinango road at Mdomo centre where they intercepted the vehicle carrying the illegal cargo.
The car is a Toyota Ipsum model whose registration number is KBJ 679M.
“Realising the magnitude of the trouble that lay ahead, the car driver jumped out and vanished into a nearby thicket. However, the co-driver and comrade in crime, Elisha Omondi, 32, wasn’t so lucky, as he was cornered and arrested,” said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in a statement.
Other suspect
The recovered narcotics were stored in a safe custody where they will be used as exhibits and the suspect was taken to the Mombasa Urban Police Station. The detectives also noted that they are still pursuing the other suspect.
Cases of drug trafficking in the coast region are quite common. In April, police officers in Mombasa arrested a drug trafficker and apprehended 169.18 grams of heroin whose value was estimated at Sh507,540.
The suspect, Mwinyi Seif Salim was arrested at his home in Kisauni where police also recovered Sh1,327,300 and USD 3,610 (Sh469,300) believed to be proceeds of crime.
Police said Salim is a notorious drug trafficker in the region who uses school going girls to conduct his operations.
