Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in Mombasa have arrested two persons of interest and recovered 250 kilograms of cannabis sativa in a targeted operation aimed at dismantling narcotics supply chains along the coast.

Taking it to their social media handles on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that, based on credible intelligence, officers first raided the Port Reitz area in Changamwe, where they found one person who was believed to be a key figure in the illegal trade.

His arrest led to a broader trail that led detectives to his accomplice, a 23-year-old who was traced to the Mudengereni location in Kisauni.

“Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) Mombasa have arrested two traffickers and seized 250 kilograms of cannabis sativa. Acting on credible tips, the detectives descended on the 43-year-old in the Port Reitz area of Changamwe. Upon questioning, the first person of interest took officers to his rented house, where a search was conducted, and two sacks of Cannabis sativa were recovered, well packaged and ready to distribute.

The DCI confirmed that the persons of interest are in custody awaiting the court proceedings, as detectives continue to investigate the larger drug trafficking network, which is suspected to be operating within Mombasa and its environs.

Police commitment to drug trafficking crackdown

The DCI further reaffirmed their dedication to combatting the narcotics trade, saying that such activities will remain committed to fighting traffickers and disrupting supply chain activities that may affect communities.

The confiscated cannabis is retained as an exhibit to be used in court, and the authorities are urging members of society to report any drug-related activities to the authorities through anonymous reporting systems.

Detectives reported that the operation is related to continual nationwide crackdowns on routes of trafficking narcotics, which have progressively shifted to coastal urban settlements. Officers also warned that networks are becoming more advanced, with rented houses and informal settlements often being used to hide illegal consignments so that they go unnoticed by law enforcement agencies.

The Anti-Narcotics Unit reiterated that destruction of supply chains will be achieved by taking both enforcement action and vigilance of the people in all coastal counties.
