Details of Wetang’ula’s meeting with Algerian Ambassador to Kenya

National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang’ula has shared details of his meeting with the Algerian Ambassador to Kenya Mahi Boumediene, held at his office at the Parliament Buildings.

In a statement on Friday, February 28, 2025, Wetang’ula said that the meeting aimed to strengthen the bilateral ties between Kenya and Algeria, with a particular focus on key areas such as technology, higher education, health, energy, and petroleum.

The National Assembly speaker said that the discussions were a continuation of the efforts to foster deeper collaboration between the two nations that were initiated during his visit to Algeria’s capital in 2024.

“Early this morning, I hosted the Algerian Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Mahi Boumediene, who paid me a courtesy visit at my office in Parliament Buildings,” Wetang’ula said.

“Our discussions centred on the strengthening of bilateral relations between Kenya and Algeria, particularly in the areas of technology, higher education, health, and energy and petroleum. These conversations built upon the engagements initiated during my visit to Algiers last year.”

Wetang’ula, as part of his push for enhanced parliamentary diplomacy, extended an invitation to the President of the Algerian Parliament adding that the invitation is aimed at exploring avenues for greater collaboration and partnership between the two nations.

“As part of our commitment to deepening parliamentary diplomacy, I extended an invitation to the President of the Parliament of Algeria to explore avenues for further collaboration between our two nations,” he said.

The speaker also took the opportunity to thank Algeria for supporting Kenya in the African Union Commission Chairmanship elections.

“Furthermore, I expressed my gratitude to Algeria for honouring its pledge to support Kenya’s candidacy in the recently concluded African Union Commission Chairmanship elections, where former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga was fronted,” he added.

The speaker further acknowledged Algeria’s ongoing contribution to Kenya’s education sector, highlighting Algeria’s commitment to offering scholarships to Kenyan students, particularly in technology-based fields, which plays a vital role in advancing education and skills development for the youth in Kenya.

“I further acknowledged Algeria’s ongoing support for Kenyan students pursuing scholarships, particularly in technology-based fields, and expressed appreciation for this invaluable contribution to our education sector,” he added.

Wetang’ula on Ramadan

In the same statement, Wetang’ula conveyed his warm wishes to Muslims across the country as they begin the Holy Month of Ramadan. He expressed hope that this period would be one of reflection, prayer, generosity, and peace.

“Finally, as our Muslim brothers and sisters prepare to begin the Holy Month of Ramadan, I extended my heartfelt wishes for a period of reflection, prayer, generosity, and peace, one filled with hope for the future,” he stated.
