Defending champions Palmeiras reach Copa Libertadores final
Playmaker Dudu scored a late equalizer as defending champions Palmeiras drew 1-1 at Atletico Mineiro on Tuesday to advance to the Copa Libertadores final on away goals.
After a goalless draw in last week’s first leg between the Brazilian rivals, Atletico took the lead just after halftime at the Mineirao when Eduardo Vargas headed home at the far post after Jair’s cross from the right wing.
The goal sparked both teams into action and Vargas had the chance to make it 2-0 three minutes later when Nacho Fernandez released him inside the 18-yard box with a deft through ball. But the Chile international forward failed to make clean contact and his timid shot was turned around the post by goalkeeper Weverton.
The visitors also looked more dangerous as the match progressed and forward Rony twice spurned chances on the counterattack when he had only goalkeeper Everson to beat.
Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira replaced Rony with Gabriel Veron in the 67th minute and the move paid immediate dividends. Moments later, Veron beat his opponent with a driving run into the box before crossing for the onrushing Dudu, who bundled home a shot from point blank range.
The Verdao defended unwaveringly thereafter to secure a draw and keep alive their hopes of winning South America’s top club trophy for a second straight year and the third time in their history.
Palmeiras will play the winner of the other semifinal between Ecuador’s Barcelona SC and Brazilian giants Flamengo in the title decider at Montevideo’s Centenario stadium on November 27. Flamengo take a 2-0 lead into Wednesday’s second leg in the Ecuadorian port city of Guayaquil.
