DCP youths gear up to welcome Rigathi Gachagua
By Faith Lagat, August 17, 2025Excitement is mounting among Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) youths as they gear up to welcome their party leader, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, back from a shortened US tour.
In vibrant scenes shared on the party’s X handle, youthful supporters dressed in green shirts and red caps are seen preparing for the much-anticipated arrival set for Sunday, August 17, 2025.
The party said it has deliberately opened its doors to young leaders, offering them platforms to seek elective seats under its ticket.
“DCP youths are ready to receive party leader Rigathi Gachagua. The party has opened doors for young leaders to join and seek elective seats through the party,” read part of its statement, underscoring the strategic role of the youth ahead of the by-elections scheduled for November 27, 2025.

By-election litmus test
Gachagua cut short his two-month tour of the United States on August 14, citing the urgency of domestic political engagements. From Baltimore, he expressed regret to Kenyans in the diaspora for skipping several planned visits but promised to reschedule the tour early next year.
He is expected to rest briefly with his spouse, Pastor Dorcas, before resuming political activities upon his arrival on August 21.
The by-elections, which will cover six constituencies, one senatorial seat, and 16 ward seats, will serve as a critical test for the DCP’s growing influence. The party has already unveiled candidates such as Edgar Busiega for Malava and Aden Mohammed for Banisa, with the official campaign period beginning on October 8. In his address, Gachagua praised grassroots chapters for their coordination and planning, saying, “You are simply the best.”
Rising tensions
Despite the enthusiasm, signs of internal friction have begun to emerge. On August 17, DCP Nairobi Patron Irungu Nyakera proposed a 2027 line-up that excluded Gachagua, calling for a Kamba president and Kisii deputy president in the name of ethnic balancing. The suggestion has raised questions about the party’s unity heading into the polls.
At the same time, the party leadership has alleged a state plot to arrest or even assassinate Gachagua upon his return. Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala issued a stern warning, saying, “If they dare lay a hand on him, the country will grind to a halt.”
As DCP youths prepare to stage a heroic reception at JKIA, Gachagua’s return symbolises both an energised movement and the deep political uncertainty surrounding his leadership.
