DCI launches investigations after Navy seize meth worth Ksh8.2B

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations following the seizure of large methamphetamine haul with an estimated value of Ksh8.2 billion.

In a statement on Saturday, October 20, 2025, DCI indicated that a team of detectives would be probing the origin of the consignment and its intended destination.

“Authorities Investigating Origin and Destination of Ksh 8.2 Billion Methamphetamine Shipment,” DCI’s statement read in part.

“Investigations are underway to determine the source and intended destination of 769 packages containing a crystalline substance, identified as methamphetamine. The seized narcotics have an estimated street value of Ksh8.2 billion,” it added.

Navy confirms interception

Their statement came after Deputy Navy Commander Sankale Kiswaa confirmed the operation where a vessel was intercepted some 630 kilometres off the coast of Mombasa in the Indian Ocean and escorted the vessel safely to port under armed guard.

“Kenya Navy was able to intercept this suspicious vessel about 630 kilometres east of Mombasa, and we have been able to conduct this operation successfully. We were able to arrest it and escort it here to the Port of Mombasa,” Sankale stated.

Addressing the media after the operation, the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Director Amin Mohammed Ibrahim, indicated that the officers discovered 769 packages containing methamphetamine.

“We were able to discover 769 packages containing a crystalline substance that weighing approximately 1,024 kilograms of what came out to be methamphetamine,” Amin stated.

Six foreign nationals were arrested and are in custody, pending arraignment in court, while the consignment was seized and secured as evidence.

Sankale and other security officers hailed the record interception of more than a ton (1,024 kilograms) of methamphetamine as a breakthrough in Kenya’s ongoing fight against narcotics trafficking and addiction.
