Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have seized bhang valued at Ksh72 million and arrested six men in a major operation targeting drug traffickers in Mombasa.

According to a statement by the DCI shared on X on Sunday, November 23, 2025, the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) acted on intelligence to intercept a truck along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway before the drugs reached the streets.

“A well-coordinated operation led by Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) detectives in Mombasa has resulted in the arrest of six traffickers along with the seizure of bhang valued at approximately Ksh72 million,” the statement read.

An inspection of the truck uncovered 50 sacks containing long rolls of bhang wrapped in khaki paper, weighing a total of 2,400 kilograms. The truck driver and the other 3 were arrested on the spot. “An inspection of the truck uncovered 50 sacks stuffed with long rolls of bhang wrapped with khaki papers weighing a total of 2,400kg,” the statement reads.

Further investigations led detectives to intercept additional vehicles believed to be part of the distribution network: a Toyota Noah and a Nissan Note. The DCI revealed that the vehicles were intended to transport the seized bhang for distribution across Mombasa and its environs.

“All six suspects are in custody, undergoing processing, while the seized narcotics and vehicles are being detained as exhibits,” the statement confirmed.

The DCI also praised members of the public for their vigilance, noting that tip-offs were crucial in disrupting the trafficking operation. “The DCI remains steadfast in the war against drug trafficking and salutes vigilant members of the public whose timely tip-offs keep our communities safer,” the statement concluded.

This operation highlights the ongoing efforts by Kenyan authorities to curb drug trafficking, protect communities, and ensure that illegal narcotics do not flood urban areas.

The arrested suspects will face prosecution, while investigations continue to dismantle the wider network behind the smuggling of the high-value bhang consignment.
