DCI arrests TikToker behind viral seditious video in Mombasa
By Kenneth Mwenda, August 5, 2025Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended a man in Mombasa over a viral TikTok video deemed seditious and a threat to public order.
The arrest follows swift action by security agencies after the video sparked concern among Kenyans and authorities alike.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Monday, August 5, 2025, the DCI confirmed the arrest of the individual in connection with the controversial video, which was widely circulated on August 1.
“Detectives have arrested …, in connection with a seditious video that was widely circulated on TikTok on August 1, 2025,” the agency stated.
According to investigators, the clip in question contained “threats of violence and incitement against public order,” which prompted a multi-agency response.
“The inflammatory clip… quickly went viral, triggering public concern and swift action from security agencies,” the DCI added.
Using forensic digital trails, detectives traced the suspect to a hideout in the Miritini area of Mombasa County, where he was captured without resistance.
“Following forensic leads, detectives trailed [the suspect] to his hideout in the Miritini area of Mombasa County, where he was swiftly apprehended,” read part of the DCI’s statement.

Evidence seized during arrest
Upon searching the suspect’s residence, detectives recovered items believed to support their investigation, including: two pairs of tactical combat fatigues, a notebook containing the phrase: “We are going to apply guerrilla resistance tactics – Justice to all freedom heroes”, three mobile phones, and assorted documents linked to a political movement.
He is currently in police custody, undergoing further processing as detectives prepare to present him before a court of law.
“[He] is currently in custody, undergoing processing as he awaits his court appearance,” the DCI concluded.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from spreading inflammatory content and report any such material to law enforcement channels.
