‘Date with sleuths’ aborts as DCI denies summoning Kaka
By Manuel Ntoyai, December 18, 2019It remains a riddle as to whether Kennedy Ombima, alias King Kaka, had yesterday been summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to record a statement over his song Wajinga Nyinyi.
The artiste startled netizens in the morning when he posted on his social media platforms that he had been summoned by the DCI.
At around 12.30pm, he arrived at the DCI headquarters dressed in a black T-shirt and black pair of jeans. He was in the company of his wife Nana Owiti, lawyer Cohen Amanya, manager Dennis Njenga and a legion of musicians and rights activists who included Starehe MP Charles Njagua alias Jaguar, Wahu Mathenge, Eric Wainaina, Juliani and Nonini and spoken word artiste Teardrops.
However, his ‘date’ with the investigators was never to be, after the DCI denied having summoned him.
“We wish to condemn strongly false information being peddled through social media to the effect that one Kennedy Ombima @RabbitTheKing has been summoned. Nobody from @DCI_Kenya has summoned him…” read a tweet by the DCI.
That notwithstanding, King Kaka, while addressing the media outside the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road, said his life was in danger.
He claimed he had been receiving threats on his phone and social media sites, alleging a person who only identified himself as Onyancha had called his manager asking the rapper to present himself at the bureau.
“My manager was called at 10:41am by a man who identified himself as Onyancha. He said it was either I present myself or ‘they’ would come for me. When we got here we were told the number the caller used does not exist in the DCI data,” he said.
“I love Kenya and that’s why I did the song. Now it’s up to you Kenyans because I have played my part. At the moment I don’t feel safe. I have a family; I have kids and I need security.”
The development came a day after Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru accused the artiste of using his song to publish false accusations against her with no basis.
Through her lawyers Kiragu Wathuta & Company Advocates, Waiguru claimed she had never been prosecuted before the courts and demanded King Kaka to permanently pull down the video from YouTube and all his social media platforms.
She also gave the rapper a 48-hour ultimatum to, among other things, issue an equivocal, unqualified and unreserved retraction and an apology.
However, the rapper’s lawyer Amanya denied receiving the said demands from Waiguru.
The musician later recorded a statement at the Muthaiga Police Station that was documented under OB No. OB42/17/12/19.
A number of lawyers have already showed their willingness to defend the rapper pro bono, should Waiguru or any other person sues him, among them Ahmednasir Abdullahi, Martha Karua, Nelson Havi and Ekuru Aukot.
