Crisis looms in city over workers’ strike

Nairobi County workers have issued a threat to down tools from today over what they say is unwillingness by City Hall to address their grievances.
The Kenya County Government Workers Union had issued a seven-day strike notice of their intention to proceed on strike starting July 4.
Among the issues cited by the union are persistent salary delays, failure to complete promotion of all eligible staff, unwillingness to finalise a pay rise negotiation, perennial electricity disconnections and failure to pay NHIF premiums and remit monthly deductions.
Nairobi Staff Branch Secretary Festus Ngari accused City Hall of failing to address issues they raised.
“Your reply letter is a testament that your office is not in any way committed to fulfilling the urgent needs of our members and that there has been no single action transcending mere words,” Ngari said.
In the response, acting County Secretary Jairus Musumba said the county government was in the process of addressing the issues they raised.
This is not the first time City Hall staff are threatening to strike over delayed salaries. In February, they downed tools for similar reasons among other issues. But the strike was called off after an agreement was reached between the union and Nairobi County officials.
