Crisis looms as civil servants threaten to strike over SRC directive not to review salaries

Crisis looms in the public sector after civil servants’ unions threatened to go on strike over a directive by Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) not to review pay in the next two years.
Speaking on Friday at Solidarity Building in Nairobi, Secretary General of Kenya Electrical Workers Union Earnest Nadome gave the Government 14 days to change its stand failure to which they will down their tools.
“This is going to be the mother of all strikes. There is no way we will have such a directive when the government continues to waste money every day,” Nadome said.
Nadome said Treasury should stop double speak and be alive to the fact that workers will finance its Ksh3.6 trillion budget.
Nadome said they have already mobilised unions across all sectors to down their tools.
On Thursday the commission announced there will be no review of the basic salary structures, allowances and benefits paid in the public sector in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 financial years.
The commission chair Lyn Mengich said salary notch adjustments in existing structures, as set or advised by SRC, will continue to be applied within the budget allocation.
