Court verdict on Wajir governor faulted
Wajir Governor Ahmed Ali Muktar has disagreed with the three-judge Bench that reinstated his former boss Mohamed Abdi Mohamud, saying its decision did not consider public interest.
Terming the court’s verdict as ill-intended and one whose timing was wrong, Muktar said judges Edward Murithi, Patrick Otieno and Thripsisa Cherere, sitting in Meru, erred in reinstating the impeached governor six months to the General Election.
The court annulled Muktar’s elevation and ordered him to assume his previous deputy governor position.
He said while it was Abdi’s right to seek legal redress, the court’s decision has only served to disrupt the normal running of the county insisting that public interest was not considered before rendering the verdict.
“The court’s decision reinstating the former governor came at the wrong time and it is one that did not consider the public interest. As you may recall, my former boss Mohamed Abdi was impeached in April 2021 and the decision was upheld by the Senate in May, same year.
It is almost a year down the line. The ruling was delayed and I believe it did not come at the right time, when people are going for elections,” an angry Muktar told People Daily, yesterday in an interview.
Create chaos
Muktar, who alongside the Wajir County Assembly has filed a notice of appeal, has vowed to challenge the decision to reinstate Abdi all the way to the Supreme Court.
“Honestly, a time like this when people are campaigning is the wrong time to have such wrangles in accounting. Wajir county faces its fair share of problems from the drought to insecurity,” he said.
He observed that though the ruling may not affect much when it comes to him discharging his duties as substantive governor; it creates chaos as the ex-county boss has his followers including some county staff who are solidly behind him.
