A Nairobi court has ordered a suspect accused of defrauding over Sh2.3 million to be remanded at the Industrial Area Prison pending his trial.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi in her ruling declined to grant Jitendra Amritlal Pattni bond, saying that the prosecution has proved that he absconded court after taking a plea, resulting in the issuance of an arrest warrant.

The magistrate said that it has taken seven months for the warrant to be fulfilled. The accused person was brought to court on a warrant of arrest from his hideout in the Parklands area.

Pattni was charged with obtaining money by false pretences on diverse dates between January 17, 2023, and February 20, 2023, at Parklands.

According to the charge sheet presented by the prosecution, Pattni, with intent to fraudulently obtain cash amounting to Sh2,375,000 from Shaitsa Khamisa Abdul Latif, falsely pretended that he could supply her with precious items.

Pattni was also charged with issuing a bad cheque to Latif on March 3, 2023, for Sh475,000, knowing well that the account had insufficient funds.

On count three, he is charged with issuing a bad cheque of Sh95,000 in favour of Latif.
