A female police constable in Uasin Gishu County suspected of shooting her estranged husband 11 times killing him on the spot will remain in police custody for 14 days, the Eldoret court ruled yesterday.

Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan directed that the 32-year-old Constable Lillian Biwott, of Critical Infrastructure Police Unit attached to Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs), Eldoret branch be detained at Eldoret Central police station custody.

This was after the investigating officer Stephen Nzau who is attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) asked for more time to complete investigations into the Saturday night incident.

Biwott is said to have shot her estranged husband Victor Kipchumba, who is a former matatu driver plying the Eldoret-Iten route at their Kimumu rental house following a dispute.

While applying for more time, the investigating officer told the court that they are yet to record statements from key witnesses at the scene of the incident on the fateful Saturday night.

He informed the court that the murder weapon, an AK 47 assault rifle which was retrieved from the suspect upon surrendering herself to the police at the station is to be taken to ballistic examination together with ammunition and spent cartridges.

Self defence

“Your honour, we are praying for 14  days because a post-mortem is yet to be conducted on the body of the deceased which is being preserved at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary,” said Nzau.

The suspect is said to have quarreled with her husband on the fateful Saturday evening before proceeding to work at the Kebs offices situated in Eldoret town.

According to the suspect, she went back to the house to check on her children, but her husband threatened to stab her using a kitchen knife thus, prompting her to shoot him in self-defence.

After committing the alleged incident, according to her statement, she fled the scene before reporting the murder incident to the Eldoret police where she was arrested.

Neighbours claimed that the couple had been having frequent domestic issues for a while that led to the unfortunate incident.
