County pushes for closure of 11 bars over noise
Kisumu City Management has recommended the closure of 11 restaurants and bars, citing extreme noise pollution.
In a letter addressed to the County Department of Trade, Tourism and Marketing, the City Directorate has called for the immediate revocation of operation licences of the establishments within the CBD, city and residential estates, accusing them of non-conformity to the relevant environmental laws on noise regulation. The named premises are Alleways Beer Garden, Anchors Lounge, Fabric Lounge, Ranalo Kosewe, Maryland, River Yala, Vunduba, OTTRO Lounge, Mamba Bar and Restaurant, VIP lounge, Black Pearl lounge.
Additionally, the administration has accused Vunduba restaurant of blocking access to a public road thus hindering ease of traffic flow in the area.
Acting City Manager Abala Wanga (pictured) yesterday said the decision to have the premises closed followed numerous complaints from members of the public.
He accused the aforementioned establishments of acting in disregard to the numerous notices issued by the city management, noting that they have become notorious for noise pollution.
According to Wanga, the business premises have failed to comply with noise reduction measures despite several warnings.
“The city management is in receipt of complaints from the general public on the noise emanating from restaurants and bars within the CBD, city estates and residential areas. Despite the intervention of the city management through the issuance of numerous notices, these eateries and entertainment joints continue to be a nuisance through emission of loud music,” he said.
It remains to be seen if the proposal by the city management to have the joints closed will be implemented following its previous frantic efforts to have them regulate noise from their premises.
