Compensate British rule victims, lobby says
By KNA, July 5, 2023Mau Mau Original Trust will continue to push for compensation from the British government for all Kenyans for the torture inflicted on them during the colonial period.
The chairperson of the organisation Ngacha Karani said they have been holding public participation forums around the country and asking people to register with the organisation so that they can benefit from compensation promised by the British government.
Karani said all Kenyans have a right to be compensated as their forefathers were tortured or killed while fighting for independence.
“We came to tell our people that they have the right to be compensated because they were mistreated by the British. We have moved to all the communities in the country and confirmed that our people suffered,” he said.
He said the British Government, through their lawyer Martin Dyer and former British Ambassador Edward Clay, had in the past announced that they will pay adequate compensation to families of people who suffered during colonial rule.
“Adequate compensation means good money. Healing psychological scars is more expensive than healing physical scars. This means the compensation will be good money,” he said.
He was speaking at the Narok North Youth Empowerment Hall during a public participation forum.
He said most Mau Mau veterans were living in abject poverty many years after independence.
Narok Mau Mau Original Trust chairperson Daniel Mwangi asked people to come out in large numbers so that they can benefit from the compensation which, he said, will be given to all registered people.
