Community perception of female leadership bars women from vying – TIFA poll

By , March 7, 2022

Lack of encouragement and support from communities are the major reasons why women are not elected, new research by TIFA has shown.

Among those who were polled, 50 per cent cited communities as the major stumbling block to women leadership.

Some 39 per cent of the respondents said women do not have the financial support necessary to stand for election.

Another 34 per cent cited lack of confidence among women.

“The two lowest-ranked reasons were lack of experience and lack of education.

“Some 50 per cent of respondents said that lack of educational qualifications was not a factor explaining women’s lower participation as candidates in elections,” the research firm stated.

In 2017 election, only three female leaders were elected as senators, governors (3), deputy governors (7), Members of National Assembly (23), and MCAs (97).

TIFA carried out the research in all 47 counties

The survey has a margin error of 2.49 per cent and was funded by the research firm.
