‘Collaborate to build resilient food systems by investing in infrastructure’ – Ruto urges African countries

President William Ruto has urged African countries to collaborate to build resilient food systems.

The head of state who on Saturday, January 11, 2025, attended the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme in Kampala, Uganda, said the African countries can build the resilient food systems by investing in infrastructure, fostering innovation and adopting technology.

Taking to his official X account, President Ruto stated that the objective of the plan is to end hunger in the continent.

He further pointed out that the move will also ensure access to nutritious food, promote sustainable practices that safeguard the planet’s future and position agriculture as a driver of jobs and prosperity.

“African countries must collaborate to build resilient food systems by investing in infrastructure, fostering innovation and adopting technology. The objective is to end hunger in the continent, ensure access to nutritious food, promote sustainable practices that safeguard the planet’s future and position agriculture as a driver of jobs and prosperity,” Ruto wrote on X.

Ruto on Kampala Declaration

Moreover, President Ruto stated that he had committed that Kenya would domesticate the Kampala Declaration that was adopted during the Summit to succeed the Malabo Declaration, whose implementation period has ended.

“During the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme in Kampala, Uganda. I committed at the summit that Kenya will domesticate the Kampala Declaration, adopted during the Summit, to succeed the Malabo Declaration, whose implementation period has ended,” Ruto stated.

Malabo Declaration

At the African Union Summit in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea in June 2014, Heads of State and Government adopted a remarkable set of concrete agriculture goals to be attained by 2025.

The Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation for Shared Prosperity and Improved Livelihoods, is a set of new goals showing a more targeted approach to achieve the agricultural vision for the continent, which is shared prosperity and improved livelihoods.

The Post Malabo CAADP Agenda development process has three work streams – Stakeholder consultations, Analysis, design and drafting, and Political mobilization – across the continent culminating in the declaration of a new agenda and commitments by the Heads of States and Governments (HOSG) in the first quarter of 2025.
