Polack says club should focus on treating current squad well before fresh signings
By Christopher Owuor, January 10, 2020Kenyan Premier League record champions Gor Mahia are yet to make any signing 10 days into the Kenyan Premier League mid season player transfer window.
It is unlike K’Ogalo to stay modest in the transfer market and now People Sport has learnt that there is currently a stand-off at the club over the subject owing to the prevailing financial crisis.
Head coach Steven Polack yesterday ruled out any new signings despite the fact that the team had already spotted a Ugandan forward who has been training with them for the last couple of days.
“Why sign new players when we are struggling to take care of the ones we have. We have not signed players but there are a number we are looking at.
They are training with us but that is all they are doing, just training with us at the moment, nothing more,” said the Englishman after the team’s training yesterday.
Polack’s stance, however, sharply contradicts the club as K’Ogalo scouting team already identified renegade Yanga striker Juma Balinya, who jetted into the country earlier in the week to hold contract talks.
Balinya bolted from the Tanzania giants after they failed to pay him wages for three months, but Gor are not any better as their players have also gone for a similar period without pay.
K’Ogalo’s interest in his services is necessitated by the exit of striking duo of Gnamien Yikpe and Francis Afriyie who signed for Yanga in Tanzania and Township Rollers of Botswana, respectively.
At Utalii Hotel, struggling Kariobangi Sharks are set to lose their highly rated offensive midfielder Duke Abuya.
The player, who scored against English Premier League side Everton during the SportPesa Super Cup in July last year, has flown to Zambia for contract talks with unnamed club.
Sharks have miserably failed to live up to expectations and only won their second league match this season on Wednesday when they stunned Bandari 1-0 in Mombasa.
Abuya’s exit is likely to leave a dent too big to fill immediately and jeopardise their relegation fight.
Impressive Western Stima have roped in three players in defender Festus Omukoto who has decamped from Kakamega Homeboyz to the Salim Babu-coached Stima in search of more playtime.
The others are ex Sony Sugar forwards Kevin Omundi and Stephen Onyango.
