Kericho County Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has urged the government to prioritize repairs on the Londiani-Muhoroni road to prevent the rising number of accidents.

Speaking during the launch of the Kapchebwai School water project, Cheruiyot emphasized that the road had become a danger zone, with injuries and fatalities becoming alarmingly frequent.

Potholes galore

He stressed the need for the government to take responsibility and focus on repairing existing roads before planning for new expansions.

According to Cheruiyot, the Londiani-Muhoroni road, riddled with potholes, no longer qualifies to be called a road and requires immediate attention.

“Every day, people are dying, people are getting injured on that road. The government must take responsibility and ensure this road is repaired before we even think about new road projects. Roads like this don’t deserve to be called roads anymore. We also demand that a significant portion of the levies be used to maintain roads in sugarcane-growing zones,” he added.

“The government should use the levies collected to maintain and repair roads, especially in sugarcane-growing zones,” Cheruiyot said.

His remarks come after a tragic accident last Tuesday claimed the lives of at least 10 people, while three others were critically injured in a collision between a matatu and a trailer at Pangala in Kisumu Ndogo on the Londiani-Muhoroni Road.

According to eyewitness reports, the trailer, en route to Londiani, lost control and veered into the path of an oncoming matatu headed to Kisumu, resulting in a deadly head-on collision.

Muhoroni-Londani deaths

Nine passengers, including the matatu driver, died instantly, while one person succumbed to injuries during treatment.

Just three days later, another accident claimed three lives along the same highway at Fort Ternan, Kericho County, involving a head-on collision between a lorry carrying LPG and a Nissan double cab. The impact killed the driver and two other occupants on the spot.
