Cecil Ouma’s murder case: Autopsy confirms youth mobiliser sustained one fatal chest gunshot

By , July 2, 2026

A post-mortem examination has confirmed that youth mobiliser Cecil Ouma died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, with pathologists concluding that the injury caused massive internal bleeding and fatal damage to vital organs.

The autopsy, conducted on Thursday, July 2, 2026, by government pathologist Joseph Ndungu, a pathologist representing Ouma’s family, established that the bullet entered through Ouma’s left forearm near the elbow before penetrating the chest.

“We have done the post-mortem as two pathologists, one representing the government and the other representing the family. The conclusion is that he died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the left side of the chest,” said Ndungu.

He explained that after passing through the forearm, the bullet pierced the lungs, fractured the spine and lodged behind it, causing extensive internal bleeding.

“There was a lot of bleeding inside the chest. There was internal bleeding, and that was the cause of death,” he added.

Doctors successfully recovered the bullet during the examination and handed it over to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for ballistic analysis. Additional samples were also collected to aid the ongoing investigation.

“The bullet has been retrieved and submitted for ballistic investigations. Other specimens have also been taken to complete the investigations,” Ndungu said.

The post-mortem findings came as Youth Affairs Principal Secretary Fikirini Jacobs appeared before detectives at the Nairobi Regional Criminal Investigations Headquarters to record a statement over the fatal shooting.

Speaking after meeting investigators, Fikirini said he had complied with a police summons and would continue cooperating with detectives.

“My commitment is that I will continue to make myself available for any investigation about this tragic death. I will continue to make myself available upon request by investigation agencies so that ultimately we ensure that justice is done,” he said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Ouma was allegedly shot shortly after a government youth empowerment programme in Kariokor that had been presided over by the Principal Secretary.

Police have so far recorded statements from seven witnesses, including two bodyguards attached to Fikirini and a director from the State Department for Youth Affairs who was reportedly inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Investigators have also recovered firearms from the two bodyguards for ballistic examination to establish whether either weapon fired the fatal shot.

Ouma was shot on June 30, 2026, along Nairobi’s Park Road shortly after the government event in Kariokor, a killing that has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for accountability as investigations continue.
