MPs Titus Khamala and Emmanuel Wangwe have urged sugarcane growers in Kakamega county to boycott supply of their produce to West Kenya and Butali Sugar mills citing frustrations.

The MPs said yesterday that the farmers should cancel their contracts with the two millers and instead start supplying cane exclusively to Mumias Sugar Company.

They said the two firms were engaged in dirty deals that saw sugarcane growers suffer losses. “These two companies had taken advantage of the absence of Mumias Sugar Company to frustrate our farmers by paying them less and late,” said Khamala.

He added that while Mumias, which is roaring back to life, paid their growers within five days for cane delivered to the factory at Shibale, West Kenya and Butali took even a month to clear with the farmers.

The two, who were speaking in Kakamega town, said Mumias currently had the capacity to grind all the sugarcane delivered to their factory.
