Call for global unity and cooperation for healthier, resilient environment
The UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis has called on global representatives converging at the United Nations Office in Nairobi to come up with a unified deal that addresses a future that is more equitable, inclusive and resilient for all peoples, everywhere.
Given the monumental challenges confronting an environmental emergency and the consequential need to act with urgency, he stated that those involved must ensure outcome of the Sixth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly is clear and targeted.
“We need an outcome that advance the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment – that truly promotes multilateral responses to restore the balance with nature,” he said.
And as the curtains fell on the week-long global environment dialogue, Francis urged world leaders to support effective, inclusive, and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. One of the ways to do this, according to Francis, is for the world leaders to bring back on track efforts that advocate for meeting SDGs.
“We are, without doubt, at a critical moment for the planet – and for the unity of purpose we will need if we hope to achieve our 2030 aspirations,” he noted.
“….yet, we are woefully off track in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals – the only comprehensive blueprint that was designed to offer ambitious targeted solutions to address the converging challenges of our day by 2030,” he added.
The UN boss was categorical that outcome of the dialogue should be clear on the populations who have been under-severed and at highest risk of being left furthest behind such as – Least developed countries (LDCs), landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
He expressed optimism the outcome will be an invaluable input for the upcoming Summit in New York in September when world leaders gather to revitalise multilateral cooperation and forge a new global consensus on how to deliver better for people and the planet.
