Caleb Amisi: Kenya needs accountable MPs who can challenge executive
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, March 12, 2026Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has issued a strong appeal for Kenya’s Parliament to embrace accountability, independent thinking, and principled leadership.
Speaking in a local TV interview on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Amisi emphasised that lawmakers must prioritise the national interest over party loyalty and political expediency. He warned that without such accountability, merely replacing the current parliament would not resolve the country’s persistent challenges of political indiscipline.
“This is the kind of leadership we need in this country, where a Member of Parliament can go to the president and say, ‘Sir, you are my leader, but I don’t agree with this one. Please allow me to vote otherwise.’ If we don’t have this, even if we phase out this entire parliament and bring another one with the same indiscipline, nothing will change,” Amisi noted.

Promoting independent thinking
Amisi’s remarks highlight the pressing need for a Parliament where independent thinking is respected, robust debate is encouraged, and public interest consistently takes priority over partisan politics.
He called on fellow MPs to act courageously, even when it involves challenging leadership, saying that accountability and transparency are critical for the health of Kenya’s democracy.
Ruto accused of undermining Parliament
The MP’s call comes amid growing criticism of the Ruto-led administration, which has been accused of consolidating control over independent bodies. Observers argue that Parliament has increasingly become a clearinghouse for State House directives, passing punitive laws and retrogressive bills despite public opposition. This trend, critics say, erodes democratic norms and threatens the independence of key institutions.

Kenya currently faces a constitutional and human rights crisis marked by state violence, corruption, and institutional capture.
Amisi’s appeal underscores the urgent need for a legislative body that represents the people’s interests rather than serving partisan agendas.
By advocating for accountability, independent thought, and principled leadership, Amisi is calling for a Parliament that can effectively safeguard Kenya’s democratic values.
