Budget 2026/27: Big win for Coast squatters as Mbadi allocates Ksh5 billion for resettlement
By Emmanuel Rono, June 11, 2026Thousands of landless families in the Coast region are set to benefit from a Ksh5 billion resettlement programme after National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi earmarked the funds in the 2026/27 budget to address long-standing land injustices.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, while reading the budget on June 11, 2026, Mbadi said the government remains committed to addressing historical land inequalities and promoting equitable access to land across the country.

“Addressing historical land inequalities remains a priority for this government. To promote equitable access and ensure sustainable land management, I am proposing Ksh9.4 billion for the settlement of the landless,” said Mbadi.

He announced that Ksh5 billion of the allocation will specifically target landless people in the Coast region, where squatter problems have persisted for decades and remained a major source of socio-economic challenges.
The allocation forms part of a broader government programme aimed at settling landless families and enhancing land administration across the country.

Mbadi further proposed Ksh892 million for the processing and registration of title deeds, a move expected to accelerate ownership documentation and reduce land-related conflicts.
“An additional Ksh892 million has been allocated for the processing and registration of title deeds,” he said.
Digitisation of land registries
The Treasury CS also set aside Ksh388 million for the digitisation of land registries, saying the initiative will help secure land tenure, reduce disputes and improve access to land records.

“Ksh388 million will go towards digitisation of land registries to secure tenure, reduce disputes and unlock productive land use,” Mbadi told lawmakers.
