‘Bring back action’

Team captains of clubs playing in the Betking Premier League have voiced their concerns over the suspension of sports by the government due to rising cases of Covid-19.

Most of the senior players are in unison that inasmuch as it was necessary to halt all social gatherings to contain the pandemic, the move will be counterproductive to players who eke out a living from sports.

With the government directive having hit the sports landscape like a thunderbolt, Sofapaka skipper Micheal Kibwage said this is one of the most trying periods for clubs, saying that the suspensions means that there is no way out for players who used to depend on allowances to feed their families.

“To me, the suspension of the league has hit hard. It means I have no job which means I have to look for a plan B to fend for my family. It’s difficult and all I wish is for the league to resume even if it means clubs playing in empty stadiums,” said Kibwage.

One of the fastest rising defenders in the country and who is working hard to cement his position in the national team, Kibwage said the vaccination of Betking Premier League players went through is to prove that Football Kenya Federation would want the top tier league to resume for the sake of players.

“The vaccination was a welcome move. Right now, we are training individually with no supervision and  this is contrary to what we are used to when you have to complete workouts under a club coach,”

AFC Leopards captain Robinson Kamura echoed Kibwage’s sentiments, saying players have become tired at home training on their own.

“We solely depend on football to fend for ourselves and when the league has been put on hold, things become difficult.

It may also lead to players engaging in social vices which is not good. We have all been vaccinated and this is a pointer that sooner rather than later we’ll return to action.
