Bishop scolds Gen Zs for disrespecting the president

African Inland Church (AIC) Bishop William Kotut has issued a sharp rebuke to the country’s youth over the tendency to speak negatively of their country and its leaders.

Speaking during a sermon at AIC Kabartonjo on Sunday, August 3, 2025, the priest decried a trend that could pass as mere name-calling but is laden with wide-reaching ramifications.

He cautioned that words have a greater impact on people than physically inflicted wounds.

In a pointed rebuke, the clergy urged the youths to change their ways or face a fate similar to those of the young men of biblical times who mocked the servant of God, Elijah, as a bald-headed man, only to meet their death through ravenous wolves.

Change your ways

“I watch on TV and wonder whatever happened to respect. People are speaking disdainfully about the leader of the nation. They even call them names that youths are not even supposed to use, not only on a president but also on grown-ups,” he stated.

“To the youths of Kenya, you need to change what you think about your country, what you think about your nation, and what you speak about your leaders; don’t call them names. These names you are giving to leaders are not good.

“It hurts people when you speak negatively about them. Words have tremendous weight. People can recover from wounds and heal, but they cannot recover from words that leave permanent scars,” the bishop, known for his altruistic works in the community, stated.

The bishop made the remarks in the presence of DP Kithure Kindiki, who was in attendance at the church for the Sunday sermon.

The DP was accompanied by a delegation consisting of the area county commissioner, MPs Joseph Kipkoros Makilap of Baringo North, and his Baringo South counterpart, Joshua Chepyegon Kandie.

William Kassait Kamket of Tiaty and politician Musa Sirma were among other dignitaries at the event.

His visit is coming a day after he was in the region for a community empowerment forum on Friday, August 1, 2025.

The clergy’s downdressing also extended to the opposition politician whom he accused of seeing no good in the current regime. He specifically pointed out with amazement how a section of politicians hardly sees any good undertaken by the government after being in the same administration a few years back.
