The Anglican Bishop of Bondo, Professor David Kodia, who recently stirred the masses at Nyayo Stadium during Raila Odinga’s state funeral, is once again back in the pulpit to deliver another sermon at the former Prime Minister’s final send-off at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST).

At Nyayo Stadium, everything he said moved the mourners who had gathered to pay their last respects to the former prime minister. His preaching appeared to challenge the status quo and seemed directed at the political class, condemning acts often associated with Kenyan politicians – things he described as evil and contrary to what Raila Odinga stood for.

He also spoke against the culture of politicians giving handouts to Kenyans, something commonly done in broad daylight, and cautioned against making offerings to God for publicity. He cited the biblical principle that when the right hand gives, the left should not know.

“Baba is one such politician who never used the power of money to intimidate people. Baba never used the power of his wallet as a convincing tool on others, but he used the power of persuasion. He used the power of the word.”

“Today, we have bad manners among our politicians. They have taught our people the culture of handouts: that whatever you want, you must part with money, and woe unto those who drive big vehicles; you’re in big trouble. Today, we have very bad manners among our politicians. They have taught our people the culture of handouts, where one is only seen in terms of what they can give.” Kodia stated

His words appeared to unsettle some politicians seated in the VIP section, while the crowd erupted in cheers, resonating with his message. The sermon earned him widespread praise, with Kenyans flooding social media to applaud the bishop for his powerful and courageous message.

Raila hailed

While lauding Raila for his legacy, Bishop Kodia stated that Raila Odinga was the only politician who never used the power of money to intimidate people but instead used his influence to liberate Kenyans and fight for freedom.

The bishop is once again set to take the microphone, lead the funeral service, and perform the final ritual of laying soil on Raila Odinga’s body, committing his soul to God for eternal rest in heaven.
