Babu Owino clarifies stand on supporting Kalonzo in 2027
By Mabonga Makhanu, September 3, 2025Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has come out to clarify his stand on whether he will support Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in 2027.
Speaking during an interview on K24 on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the two-term MP said he sees no problem working with Kalonzo. He questioned why Kalonzo has suddenly been branded a bad person, yet the same leader supported ODM three times in the past, and now everyone in ODM is turning against him.
He went on to mention other opposition leaders such as Martha Karua, questioning why she has also suddenly been perceived as a bad person despite supporting Azimio in 2022 and even serving as Raila Odinga’s running mate. He wondered whether it is wrong to support leaders who once stood firmly with ODM.
“Why is it that Kalonzo has all of a sudden became a bad person, Kalonzo supported us for 3 terms, 2013, 2017, 2022martha was our deputy is it wrong to support them, they were with us, they were part of us what is the function of opposition is for checks and balances and ensuring that the government delivers, that is the role of opposition,” Owino stated
This comes at a time when Babu Owino is facing a difficult relationship with his party, ODM, which sponsored him to Parliament, especially after ODM entered into a broad-based agreement with UDA, with the party leader openly appearing to support Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja of UDA for the gubernatorial seat in 2027, a seat that Babu himself is also interested in.
Kenya moja MPs
Babu Owino has since joined hands with fellow young politicians under the banner Kenya Moja, led by Edwin Sifuna. During a recent church engagement in Embakasi East, Kitutu Chache MP Antony Kibagendi urged young MPs to unite and work with opposition leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua to secure an easier win in the next general election.

He argued that for them to defeat the current government, which he accused of bribery and corruption, they must unite. He specifically appealed to leaders such as Kimilu, Sifuna, Wamuchomba, and others to bring together all opposition forces, such as Natembeya, Kalonzo, Gachagua, and Fred Matiang’i, in order to rally Kenyans behind a united front.
