Azimio threatens to form own electoral commission
By Francis Muli, July 7, 2023Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party has threatened to form its own Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following a collapse of bipartisan talks with the government.
Speaking at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation moments after his convoy made its way through the CBD, Raila also faulted the police for firing live bullets at protestors and his car.
“We’ve understood from the Kenya Kwanza brigade that they want to form the commission on their own. If they do so, that will be a Kwanza Kwanza commission and we as Azimio will go ahead and form our own commission,” Raila said.
Earlier on, Raila announced that the outfit would collect at least 10 million signatures in a bid to oust President William Ruto.
“Today we launched the movement to collect signatures from Kenyans so that they can say they are withdrawing their delegation of powers to the elected leaders. The Authors of our Constitution did not put that Article in vain. We are going to revoke that article to delegitimize the regime,” Raila said.
Among the issues that Azimio wanted to be discussed during bipartisan talks include recruitment of the national polls team, opening and audit of the IEBC servers, cost of living and reinstatement of election commissioners who were kicked out after the last General Election.
Azimio however pulled out of the talks after accusing the government side of derailing the talks by not being ‘genuine’.
