Most of the 11 Kenyatta University students who died in a grisly accident on Mombasa highway succumbed to internal injuries, a post mortem has showed.

Autopsies were carried out at the KU Funeral Home where the departed were brought following the accident in Maungu area of Taita Taveta along the Nairobi-Mombasa road on Monday night.
A pathologist’s report indicated that the victims died of severe internal and head injuries caused by the impact of the crash.

Meanwhile, survivors of the tragic accident have been holding night vigil prayers at the University’s Bishop Square along with colleagues and family members.

University was closed temporarily from Wednesday to allow the students and members of staff to mourn their departed ones.

Meanwhile, the Principal Secretary for University Education and Research, Dr Beatrice Inyangala visited students admitted at Avenue Hospital, Parklands in Nairobi who sustained various injuries. The KU students were headed for a trip to Mombasa and Malindi before the tragedy struck.

At least 11 students died on the spot in a head-on-collision between the university bus and trailer while 21 others sustained serious injuries.

Hospital Manager, Dr Said Mohammed said the hospital received 18 accident victims, whom health personnel at the facility worked tirelessly to stabilise them.

“We are happy that 17 of the patients admitted here are in stable condition,” Dr. Mohammed said, moments after taking the Principal Secretary around all the wards where the students are been admitted.
He said only one accident victim is still in critical condition and out of the 18 accident victims at the hospital, 12 are female and six are male.

The PS was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer and Board Secretary at Higher Education Loans Board, Charles Ringera, the Chief Executive Officer, Commission for University Education among others.
