Auditor General probing Sh244m given to FKF

Calls for accountability of Football Kenya Federation’s Sh 244 million funds awarded by the government for Harambee Stars’ participation at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt took a new twist yesterday after it emerged that the Office of the Auditor General had launched investigations on the issue.

Sports PS Peter Kaberia, who yesterday appeared before the Sports Parliamentary Committee, revealed that the federation had submitted a report on the expenditure of the funds which the Ministry feels was unsatisfactorily, forcing the government to seek the intervention of the auditor general.

“The football federation gave us their report on the expenditure and we sent it back with questions,” Kaberia said.

He added: “We have passed the same report to the Office of the Auditor General to look at it and give us their opinion on the figures reflected in the report of the expenditure.”

The PS was responding to accusations levelled against him by six federations which blame him of having an unresponsive attitude in their requests for funding from the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund.

When they appeared before the committee last month, the federations that included football, rugby, athletics, table tennis and hockey talked of bad blood with the PS and that he is always threatening them. They said the PS rarely finds time to listen to their grievances and hear them out.
