African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has commended Sudan for appointing a new prime minister, marking the transition from military rule to a civilian government.

Sudan’s army chief and de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Monday, May 19, 2025, appointed former UN official Kamil Idris as the country’s new prime minister.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, Youssouf commended the move as a step toward inclusive governance.

He also expressed hope that the move will contribute meaningfully to ongoing efforts to restore constitutional order and democratic governance in Sudan.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, takes note of the appointment of H.E. Dr Kamil al-Tayeb Idris as Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan. The Chairperson commends this development as a step toward inclusive governance and expresses hope that it will contribute meaningfully to ongoing efforts to restore constitutional order and democratic governance in Sudan,” the statement shared via the African Union official channels read in part.

Youssouf further urged all the Sudanese stakeholders to redouble their efforts toward a peaceful, civilian-led, and inclusive transition that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

AU support

He went ahead to assure Sudan of the AU’s support towards the transition, reiterating the union’s commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and stability of the nation.

“H.E. Mr Youssouf urges all Sudanese stakeholders to redouble their efforts toward a peaceful, civilian-led, and inclusive transition that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people, saying that the Commission remains ready to support Sudan in this regard, in collaboration with regional and international partners. The Chairperson reiterates the African Union’s firm commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and stability of Sudan and to the pursuit of a durable political solution that secures peace, development, and democratic governance for all Sudanese,” the statement read.

Idris, a career diplomat and past presidential candidate, was the director general of the United Nations’ World Intellectual Property Organisation and has also served in Sudan’s permanent mission to the UN.

Idris replaces veteran diplomat Dafallah al-Haj Ali, who was appointed by Burhan at the end of April and served less than three weeks as acting prime minister.

In April, the RSF announced it would form a rival government, a few weeks after signing a charter in Kenya with a coalition of military and political allies.
