The African Union has revealed that the submission of candidates vying for the African Union Chairperson is Tuesday, August 6, 2024.
Kenya’s candidate in the 2025 elections, Raila Odinga, has already submitted his documentation, and that means he is well within the stipulated schedule.
“The deadline for the submission of the regional nominations of candidates vying for the 8 senior leadership positions at the African Union Commission is August, 6, 2024.
“Interested candidates submit, to their member states, their curriculum vitae, along with vision statements outlining how they intend to advance the transformative agenda of the African Union, and to address the existing and emerging challenges facing the continent.,” AU said in a post on X on Monday, August 5, 2024.
Apart from the submission deadline, AU revealed the kind of people that can only be considered in the pre-selection process.
“Only names of candidates submitted by the region will be considered in the pre-selection process undertaken by the Panel of Eminent Africans. Further, only Member States that are not under AU sanctions are allowed to submit candidates.
The AUC elections have been scheduled to take place in February 2025 during the AU Union Summit.
“All eight (8) senior leadership positions of the AU Commission are open for candidates’ submissions guided by the 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of the portfolios. The positions include that of the 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧, the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧, and six 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫 posts,” AU’s statement continued.
Raila’s goal
Meanwhile, Raila is expected to vie against Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Somalia’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Fawzia Yusuf Adam, and the Seychelles’ former Vice President Vincent Meriton for the continental post.
While submitting his documents, the former Premier revealed his targets and how to achieve them while serving Africa as AUC chair, should he win the race.
“Kenya is a member in good standing within the AU and consistently meets its obligations to the Union. In addition, Kenya is an exemplar of African solutions to African problems through its financial support for the AU’s initiatives and leading role in peace, security, and conflict management on the continent, including in mediation efforts.
“Kenya seeks the support of all AU Member States and remains committed to continue playing its role at the regional, continental, and multilateral levels in the pursuit of Africa’s priorities and aspirations,” part of Raila’s documents submitted read.
