Atwoli hits out at BBI critics after holding strategy meeting in Mombasa
Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary-general Francis Atwoli has told off critics of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) who are suggesting that the proposed referendum should be held after the next General Elections.
According to the outspoken trade unionist, the BBI referendum is key to solving many political challenges bedevilling the country.
He says though the constitution of Kenya is supreme, certain issues of national importance need to be given priority.
The COTU SG appeared to suggest that postponing the next General Elections for the sake of BBI is a wise move.
“There are issues (BBI) that are more important than elections. When I hear stupid politicians, and I can call them stupid, say elections cannot be postponed, they are people who do not know what they are talking about,” Atwoli told NTV.
He added that he does not fear elections since his stand on the matter is only about ensuring a peaceful country after polls.
According to Atwoli, leaders from the larger western region should be the ones pushing for the BBI since most of them stand no chance of being elected into office if elections are held.
“Say for example, if we went for elections and there are people fighting, what would we have gained as a country?” Atwoli questioned.
His remarks came after he held a BBI strategy meeting in Malindi, Mombasa, together with key BBI proponents.
Leaders present during the meeting include the ODM leader Raila Odinga, Siaya Senator James Orengo, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo among other leaders.
