Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

Doctors’ strike

The ongoing strike by the medics is expected to be an issue that will dominate the headlines throughout the day.

The go-slow is led by Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) whose secretary general Davji Atellah has said they will not go back to work until their demands are met.

In his recent response to the strike, President Ruto said the country’s economic state cannot allow the government to meet the medics’ demands.

Mutahi Kagwe, a former Health Cabinet Secretary, added his voice to the strike and said the agreement between the government and medics, which included among other issues, employment of intern doctors and payment of allowances, is binding.

Fake fertiliser saga

With the ongoing fake fertiliser saga, the issue is expected to attract more spotlight, especially after President Ruto’s warning.

After Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi said the government has not put in place mechanisms to deal with the effects of fake fertiliser, this is set to raise more questions on the government’s ability to protect farmers from such scams.

When he appeared before the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock, Linturi said that the fertiliser presented before the lawmakers was fake, but said that it was never supplied under the government’s subsidy program.

This is an issue that is expected to grab headlines given that most parts of the country are in the planting season.
