Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

Gachagua in Rwanda

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua left the country on Saturday evening headed to Rwanda to mark 30 years of the commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi.

Gachagua is expected to represent President William Ruto at the event dubbed ‘Kwibuka 30’, which will be held today, Sunday, April 7, 2024.

Several Heads of State, envoys and heads of delegations are expected to grace the event themed ‘Remember-Unite-Renew’.

Gachagua is also expected to meet and interact with a section of Kenyans living and working in Rwanda, the meeting will be held at Serena Hotel in Kigali.

He will also discuss matters involving the improvement of the diaspora experience and economic strategies in various sectors.

The DP was accompanied by Diaspora Principal Secretary (PS) Roseline Njogu, Members of Parliament (MPs) Patrick Munene (Igamba Ngombe), Julius Rutto (Kesses), Parashina Samuel (Kajiado South), John Kaguchia (Mukurwe-ini), Benjamin Langat (Ainamoi), Agnes Pareiyo (Narok North).

Rains

As forecasted by the Kenya Meteorological Department, several parts of the country will continue receiving heavy rains.

The rainfall, according to the weatherman, is expected in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Southeast lowlands, Coast, Northeast, and Northwest regions.

“Expect widespread rainfall across the country, with heavy downpours forecasted for Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Southeast lowlands, Coast, Northeast, and Northwest regions. Stay prepared 4 potential flooding in these areas,” the weatherman warns.

Scheduled power outage

Kenya Power has announced a scheduled power outage affecting four counties including Uasin Gishu, Nyeri, Kilifi and Mombasa.

In Uasing Gishu, the outage running from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm will affect Raiply Industry, Pipeline, ME Moja, Kahoya Estate, Roadblock, Khetias Supermarket, Maili Nne Estate, Majengo Catholic Church, Kiplombe, Ziwa Center, Maji Mazuri Flowers and adjacent customers.

In Nyeri, the outage starting from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm will affect part of Nyeri Town, Maathai Supermarket, Nyeri Police, Samrat Supermarket, Chieni Supermarket, Equity Bank, Safaricom Ltd, Multichoice Offices, Governor’s Office, Cooperative Bank, Absa Bank, Peak Business Centre and adjacent customers.

Other areas include Highlands’s Minerals, Agriplast Limited, Eliezer Ltd, Mathari Hospital, Cocacola Water Pump, Outspan Medical College, Chania Rwamba, Italian Memorial Church and adjacent customers.

In Kilifi, the power outage will run from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm affecting Kilifi Township, Kilifi Prisons, Bofa Residential, Bofa Quarries, Baobab Hotel, Kilifi Hotel, Kilifi Bay Hotel, Kilifi County Hospital, Kiwandani, Sea Horse Hotel, St Thomas Mkoroshoni, Kibaoni, Navy, Pwani University, Desalination Plant, Rojo, Kakanjuni, Kasava, Baricho, Vitengeni, Milore, Tango Baya, Mavueni, Dsitsoni, Chasimba, New Life Ministries, Mwarakaya, Jaribuni, Kakanjuni, Ganze, Vitengeni, Sokoke, Matano Manne, Palakumi, Mwapula, Dzikunze, Mnarani, Kilifi Plantation, Vipingo, Vipingo Industries, Shauri Moyo, Kadzinuni and adjacent customers.

Doctors’ strike

 The doctors’ strike enters day 25 today deepening the health crisis in the country after clinical officers.

The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) on Friday reaffirmed that their strike which began on Monday is still on despite what they termed as intimidation and threats.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacist and Dentists Union (KMPDU) on Friday announced a scheduled demo slated for Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

“KMPDU extends a nationwide invitation to all Doctors, Medical Interns, and Medical Students to join us in peaceful demonstrations on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Let’s unite our voices to advocate for the rights of doctors and strive for improved healthcare standards for Kenyans,” KMPDU said.
