Ang’ata Barikoi killings
The Angata Barikoi incident in Trans Mara, Narok County, is poised to dominate headlines on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, as investigations into the violent clashes continue.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja visited the area on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, to assess the situation. He apologised for the police’s heavy-handed response and ordered the immediate transfer of the area’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) and General Service Unit (GSU) officers.
Local leaders, including Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno, have called for a thorough investigation into the incident and advocated for an out-of-court settlement to the longstanding land dispute, emphasising the need for peaceful coexistence between the Kipsigis and Maasai communities.
“Nani aliwaambia nyinyi mtume askari kupiga sisi? The County Commissioner and County Commander were not aware of any operation here. How do you order such an operation of that magnitude without even informing the County Commander?” Ng’eno stated.
On Monday, April 28, 2025, a confrontation between police and residents protesting a contentious land dispute resulted in five civilian deaths and injuries to over 15 individuals, including police officers.

The unrest was sparked by the arrival of surveyors, accompanied by security personnel, to demarcate a 6,300-acre parcel of land claimed by 448 families possessing title deeds issued in 2002.
Residents accused the government of defying a court order that prohibited interference with the land pending the resolution of an ongoing legal case.
