Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Rainfall, floods
The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rainfall to continue in various parts of the country this week.
In a statement on Wednesday, the weatherman announced that the heavy rainfall being experienced in the country will continue up to May 1, 2024.
“Expect continued rainfall across various parts of the country as indicated in the rainfall forecast maps for 24th April to 1st May. Heavy to Very Heavy events are likely in Highlands East/West of Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-eastern lowlands, Coast, North-western, and North-eastern Kenya,” the weatherman stated.
Early this week, several people were caught up in floods caused by the rains with properties of unknown value being destroyed.
On Wednesday, the Kenya Red Cross rescued hundreds of Nairobians marooned by floods.
“Following other rescue operations in Mathare, Githurai 45 and other places in Nairobi, we have also rescued 96 people at Graceland in Athi River following yesterday night’s heavy downpour. This was made possible through the collaborative efforts of a multi-agency rescue team and community members,” the Kenya Red Cross stated.
EACC workshop
The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC) and the Crime Journalists Association of Kenya (CJAK), have organized a capacity-building workshop for journalists whose routine duties involve development, review, analysis and reporting on content relating to corruption, economic crimes and governance issues in Kenya, to be held at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi on Thursday, April 25, 2024.
The workshop, which will bring together 100 practising journalists including show hosts, news anchors, producers, editors and reporters, is aimed at enhancing the watchdog role of the Kenyan media in the fight against corruption and impunity in the country.
Eminent speakers and subject experts including former Chief Justice David Maraga, EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak, EACC Chairperson David Oginde, Media Council of Kenya CEO David Omwoyo and Head of Anti-Corruption, Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programs, Regional Office for Eastern Africa Charity Kagwi-Ndungu will address the forum.
