Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.

Ruto’s Mt Kenya tour

President William Ruto is set to kick off the second day of his development tour of the Mt Kenya region.

The head of state will today, Wednesday, April 2, 2025, head to Meru and Kirinyaga to continue his tour.

During the tour, Ruto is expected to engage with local communities and update them on his administration’s progress. He is particularly focused on infrastructure developments that aim to uplift the region’s economy, such as roads, housing, and market initiatives.

IEBC interviews

The nine-member Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection panel is expected to continue interviewing candidates seeking to become members of the electoral commission.

The panel is seeking to recruit six members out of the 110 candidates that were shortlisted.

The interviews follow the finalization of the chairperson’s interviews, where prominent names, including Charles Nyachae, Anne Amadi and Joy Mdivo, are gunning for the top job.

Given the higher number of the candidates that have to be interviewed for the IEBC member positions, National Assembly leader of the minority party Junet Mohamed is seeking to extend the tenure of the nine-member IEBC selection panel by 14 days.

In a notice of motion at the National Assembly on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, Junet argues that given the number of candidates the panel has to interview, there is a need for the extension.

“Vide gazette notice 715 of January 27, 2025, President William Ruto appointed members of the selection panel for the recruitment of nominees for the appointment as the chairperson and members of the IEBC. Noting that upon the appointment, the selection panel commenced the recruitment process, longlisted all applicants, and subsequently shortlisted qualified applicants for the position of chairperson and members of the IEBC,” Junet said.

“Further noting that paragraph 6(i) of the first schedule of the IEBC Act, cap 7 (c) provides that the selection panel shall finalise the recruitment exercise within 90 days of its appointment and forward the names of the nominees to the president.”

High-profile graft cases

Former Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu is expected in court for the hearing of a graft case involving him, Testimony Enterprises, and six others. According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Waititu, who is currently at Kamiti Maximum Prison, is embroiled in a suit for recovery of Ksh147 million, being proceeds of corruption arising from a road construction contract irregularly awarded to a contractor during his time as a governor. The matter is coming up for hearing at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.

Another high-profile graft case to look out for involves Embakasi North Member of Parliament (MP) James Mwangi Gakuya and 10 others. EAC says the accused persons have been charged with conflict of interest and fraudulent misappropriation of public funds. The allegations stem from the allocation of Ksh40 million by the Embakasi North National Government Constituency Development Fund Committee (NGCDF) for the construction of roads that were already built by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA). The matter is coming up for ruling at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.
