Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings

IEBC selection panel interviews

The interviews for the prospective members of the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) will proceed on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

The Nelson Makanda-led commission is scheduled to interview six more candidates as the search for the members of the commission nears its end.
Robert Gichangi from Nyeri, who will face the panel from 9:30am, is among those expected on the hot seat today.

Robert Maina Ndungu from Laikipia will be the second as of 10:30am before Rodney Walter Okoth Ogendo takes the hot seat at 12:30 noon.

The day’s interview will be concluded with Roselyn Sidi Randu and Rukia Atikiya facing the panel from 3pm and 5pm, respectively.

The exercise will conclude on April 24, with the commission later proposing names to the president for consideration for the vacant chairperson’s role and six commissioners to fill the vacancies in the electoral body.

Sports awards gala

The awarding of various sports personalities in Kenya is scheduled to go down this Thursday, April 17, in a colourful gala in Nairobi.
The annual event slated for the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) will see athletes from various sports disciplines battle it out for 11 categories during the 21st edition of the awards ceremony dubbed “Celebrating Sports Excellence.”

This after a selection panel comprising Kenya’s sports journalists completed the nomination and voting process to pick the best performers in 2024 leading up to date.

Among those primed for the prestigious awards are the double Paris Olympic champion, Beatrice Chebet, and Faith Kipyegon.
The two will battle it out for the Female Personality of the Year accolade, while pugilist Boniface Mugunde and Wanyonyi lead the race for the male athlete category.

This edition will also see Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) participants recognized for their impressive show in the just concluded Term One games. Musingu Boys, who won the boys hockey title, and St. Joseph’s Girls from Kitale are among those nominated for the School Team Awards.

Founded by Paul Tergat, the outgoing president of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), the Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) Kenya is an annual event that recognizes outstanding performers in the sports industry.

Graft cases in courts this week

Meanwhile, a graft case involving Benjamin Obuya Njoga, the former Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons, is set for mention this Thursday at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.

According to the EACC, Njoga and 13 others are charged with abuse of office for fraudulent acquisition of public property and money laundering.
The allegations relate to a conspiracy between the senior officers at the State Department for Correctional Services and sole proprietors to fraudulently acquire Kes302 million from the State Department of Correctional Services.
