Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.

Cabinet Secretaries’ nominees vetting exercise

The vetting process of individuals proposed for the position of various Cabinet Secretaries position by the President on March 2025 is set to commence today, Monday, 14th April 2025, at Parliament Buildings.

Cabinet Secretaries (CS) nominees Geoffrey Ruku (Public Service) and Hanna Cheptumo (Gender) will face the relevant Committee for the exercise.

In a notice by Samuel Njoroge, the Clerk of the National Assembly, the vetting process will be handled by the Committee on Appointments, which will then report the findings to the House.

At 2:00 PM, the Committee will vet Ruku, the current Mbeere North MP, for the Public Service role.

Meanwhile, Cheptumo will be vetted for a new docket in the Ministry of Gender two hours later. Cheptumo is the widow of the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo.

This follows after the pair were among those proposed by the President during a minor reshuffle of his cabinet on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

The series of portfolio reassignments and new Cabinet nominations saw Justin Muturi fired as the CS for Public Service and Human Capital, with Mbeere North MP Ruku named as his replacement.

Reactions to Cleophas Malala’s interview

The back-and-forth and controversy surrounding the banning of ‘Echoes of War’, a dramatic piece performed by Butere Girls High School, is set to continue to dominate headlines this week.

This comes after the play’s scriptwriter and director, Cleophas Malala, on Sunday during a live interview, refuted claims of distortion or unauthorised alterations to the script are not only false but deliberately misleading.

In a live interview with a local TV station on Sunday, Malala emphasised that the script had not only been reviewed but also formally endorsed by a panel of nine adjudicators who had been duly appointed by the Ministry of Education, each of whom, he claims, praised the script for its artistic merit and thematic richness.

“We had nine adjudicators officially appointed, and every one of them gave this script a green light. They said it was a brilliant piece of work. At what point did the content suddenly become problematic?” he posed.

Graft Suspects in Courts

In the corridors of Justice, the case involving Daniel Mbaka Omwoyo, the Deputy Clerk of the County Assembly of Kisii and David Ondimu Kombo, theformer Speaker of the County Assembly of Kisii is set for mention at the Kisii Law Courts.

According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the pair is charged with abuse of office on allegations relating to the alleged irregular recruitment and employment of Everline Moraa Maraburi, a niece of the Deputy Clerk of the County Assembly of Kisii.

Reactions to AFCON U20 draw.

Football fans and sports stakeholders are set to give their reactions on the new draw for the much-awaited African Cup of Nations (AFCON) U20, undertaken on Sunday, April 13, in Egypt.

Kenya’s youngsters, the Rising Stars, are set to make their debut in the competition on April 27.

In the new draw done after Ivory Coast withdrawal, Salim Babu’s charges drew a tough-looking Group B alongside Nigeria, Tunisia and Morocco.
Kenya will be hunting for a top-two finish or securing a place among the two best 3rd placed sides to advance to the quarterfinals.
