Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has weighed in on planned the execution of Kenyan National Margaret Nduta Macharia in Vietnam oafter she was convicted for trafficking cocaine.

In his statement, Amisi expressed dissapointment terming the incident as a horrific situation that needs urgent attention, he also noted that the occurence exposes the harsh reality of the hardships young Kenyans go through in search of job opportunities abroad.

He, however, advised the youth to stay vigilant and conduct their due diligence on agencies purpoting to have linkages to employment opportunities whenever seeking for jobs.

“The story of Margaret Nduta is horrific. It presents the dire situation the young people of this country go through in search of employment overseas. In our desperate endeavour to make a living, I implore to the youth to do due diligence on any agency purporting to have linkages to job opportunities across borders,” Amisi said.

Continuing his spiel, Amisi asserted that the it was the government’s responsibility to safeguard the safety of it citizens, insinuating that the President William Ruto-led administration should intervene on the matter.

“Likewise, the primary responsibility of any government is to offer human security to her citizens from whichever part of the world,as long as your ID reads a citizen of the Republic of Kenya. The legitimacy of a government is conditional to its ability to protect her the citizens.

“It is appalling that Kenyan citizens often find themselves on their own and facing imminent threats to their lives under the full glare of apathetic government,” he added.

Intervention

Amisi’s remarks come even after his Gatundu counterpart, Elijah Njoroge Kururia revealed that Ruto had already reached out to the Vietnamese authorities over the issue.

Addressing the matter via a TikTok Live session on the evening of Saturday, March 15, 2025, Kururia stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had taken the lead in the intervention.

He, however, noted that they are stil in suspense as Vietnam was yet to provide a response as swiftly as they had hoped.

The legislator also stated that the Southeast Asian nation had shown unwavering resistance to Kenya’s plea for the lifting of the execution order on the Kenyan national, adding that they were still holding out hope that Vietnam might reconsider its stance.

“And I’m reporting that the President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have reached out to Vietnam since yesterday, but as of now, no response has been received. Vietnam has remained adamant on this matter,” he said.

“So I have heard many people asking whether the President is aware—yes, he is. You can relax. The Kenyan government is still waiting for a response. I listened to your concerns and made the necessary call to confirm whether the President had intervened.”
