Address rising insecurity in universities, State urged

Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) has urged the government to come up with measures to curb increasing insecurity in higher institutions of learning

KUSU secretary-general Charles Mukhwaya said the level of insecurity among university students was alarming, hence the need for the government to come up with immediate measures to secure university students by ensuring that universities and their environs are devoid of organised criminal gangs that continue to endanger students’ lives.

“The recent student demonstrations over insecurity at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) alongside other universities shows lack of security in our institutions; it’s high time the government beefs up security to enable smooth learning process for students,” he said.

At the same time, Mukhwaya claimed investigative agencies in the country had remained silent on  graft allegations levelled  against Maasai Mara University management.

“After the said university was exposed and investigations done, nothing seems to be moving,” he claimed.

He called on the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji to move with speed and arrest the officials allegedly involved in the plunder of public resources at the university.
