Activist wants law changed on deputy governor picking

A Human Rights activist wants the constitution amended for Governors to pick their deputies after the General Election.

Rachel Otundo said the election of Governors without running mates will end wrangles pitting them after the poll. She noted the selection of the running mates is based on regional balance and in most cases; the deputies cannot work with the Governors after they have been elected.

“The Deputies cannot be impeached. Some work with Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to intimidate Governors to remove them and take over” Otundo noted.

She said it was an oversight in the constitution that only Governors can be kicked out, noting their Deputies were using the loophole to fight the former. The activist, who is a also Gusii Governance Watch Civil Society Organization noted battles between the duo was derailing development in the counties. “In most cases, governors and their deputies do not w ork together. They create negativity when it comes to peace and development in the Counties” Otundo asserted, adding Senators can attest to it.
