81 alleged MRC members deny plans to commit felony

Some 81 suspects who were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly meeting to strategise on how to take the country’s leadership, were yesterday arraigned in a Shanzu court.

The suspects appeared before Shanzu Principal Magistrate Yusuf Shikanda and pleaded not guilty to charges of promoting warlike activities.

The charges read that on June 29, this year at around 1500 hours,in Mikanjuni in Mtwapa township in Kilifi county without lawful authority, made preparations for warlike undertaking against the people of Kenya, by being armed, singing and unlawfully assembled while singing warlike songs.

They were further slapped with a second count of preparing to commit a felony, contrary to Section 308(1) of the penal code. The court heard that on June 29, at around 1500 hours in Mikanjuni in Mtwapa township in Kilifi county, the suspects were found armed with 41 pangas in circumstances that indicated that they were so armed with the intent to commit a felony.

The suspects further denied a third count of unlawful assembly.

The court was informed that on June 29 at Mikanjuni in Mtwapa township in Kilifi county took part in unlawful assembly at the residence of Jefwa Bakari with intent to disrupt the country’s peace.
