A fire broke out in the Makina area in Kibera, Nairobi, on the morning of Saturday, May 24, 2025, causing deaths and injuries and the destruction of property of unknown value.

Kenya Red Cross, in a statement shared via their official social media accounts, revealed that together with Eagle Hospital, they had attended to 20 people that were injured in the fire incident.

The devastating fire, the Kenya Red Cross says, affected approximately 40 households.

The inferno was contained by the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade with support from community members.

“Together with Eagle Hospital, we have attended to 20 people injured in a fire incident that occurred earlier this morning in Makina, Kibera. The fire, which affected approximately 40 households, was contained by the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade with support from community members,” the Kenya Red Cross stated.

Serious burns

Kibra constituency MP Peter Orero, in a statement issued via his official Facebook account, confirmed that six people had lost their lives in the fire incident.

The lawmaker also confirmed that out of those injured, six people — one man, two women, and three children — sustained serious burns and injuries and had been rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.

“This morning, tragedy struck our community following a devastating fire incident in Makina, behind Kambi, along the route to Eagles. It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the loss of six lives at the scene. Additionally, six others — one man, two women, and three children — sustained serious burns and injuries and have been rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they fight to recover,” the lawmaker stated.

Emergency services

Orero further termed the incident a heartbreaking moment for all Kibra residents, noting that he had dispatched a team to coordinate with emergency services and ensure that those affected receive immediate assistance, including medical care, counselling, and immediate attention.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us in Kibra. We mourn with you, and we are committed to supporting you through this difficult time,” Orero stated.

“I have dispatched a team to coordinate with emergency services and ensure that those affected receive immediate assistance, including medical care, counselling, and immediate attention. We are also working closely with relevant officials to investigate the cause of the fire and put in place long-term safety measures. Let us stand together as a community in compassion, in support, and in solidarity.”
