Three suspects accused of trafficking narcotics will be arraigned in court on Thursday, March 7, 2024, to plead to the charge.

George Laban Ogutu Ogangira, Yahya Abdullahi Songolo and Sharon Wanjira who are accused of ferrying bhang, were arrested last week in a sting operation led by Anti-narcotics detectives.

During the arrest, detectives working with the Operations Support Unit intercepted the vehicle they were using along Ongata Rongai near Multimedia University.

Upon inspecting the vehicle, detectives found four bales of bhang stashed in two sacks. The detectives also inspected Laban’s home in Joska and found another two bales of bhang.

Police had sought custodial orders pending sampling and weighing of the recovered drugs, and the suspects have since been processed in readiness for plea-taking.

“Three suspects of trafficking in narcotics are set to plead to the charge on Thursday 7th March 2024 following their interception and arrest last week in a sting operation by Anti-narcotics detectives.

“George Laban Ogutu Ogangira, Yahya Abdullahi Songolo and Sharon Wanjira Mburu were arrested along Ongata Rongai Road near Multimedia University when the motor vehicle they were using, a KAV 298H Toyota Corolla was intercepted by the team augmented by the Operations Support Unit,” DCI said.

The latest comes days after police confiscated bhang worth 4.8 million in Isebania, Migori county.

While confirming the incident, Migori County police commander Francis Nguli noted that the bhang weighing 160 kilograms had been hidden in four sacks.

The illegal goods were intercepted along the Kenya-Tanzania border in the operation led by Isebania police OCS Meshack Mulwa.

Police noted that the prohibited goods destined for the country were being ferried using a motorcycle rider who escaped when he encountered the officers.

A manhunt for the suspect has since been launched.

“The sacks were abandoned by a motorcycle rider who then escaped, he is on the run and we are looking for him,” Nguli added.

The latest comes amid the heightened efforts against drug abuse in the country.

Led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagu a section of leaders have come on the front to heighten the war against drugs and alcohol, which still pose a threat across different parts of the country.
