At least 232 students from poor backgrounds in Kisii county will benefit scholarship from the Kenyan government in partnership with the World Bank.

The world Bank has channelled the funds for the  Elimu Scholarship through Equity Bank. 

 The bank’s Kisii branch manager Robinson Mirieri yesterday said a committee formed by the bank vetted the beneficiaries from Marani and Nyamache sub-counties.

Mirieri said 141 secondary school students were selected from Nyamache and 91 from Marani , adding that 128 of the beneficiaries are girls while 104 are boys.

Addressing the beneficiaries at Kisii Boys School, the manager advised learners to shun destructive vices such alcohol and drug abuse as well irresponsible sexual behaviours.

Monitor performance

Bobasi MP Innocent Obiri, assistant County Commissioners Thomas Bet, (Nyamache), Fred Sungu (Marani) and Kisii Trade Executive Edna Kangwana attended the event. 

Mirieri said stakeholders will monitor the student’s performance.

“The government and the parents have signed a contract to ensure the students  complete their education and contribute to the country’s economic development” he said.

Obiri lauded the World Bank and the government for the initiative and challenged the beneficiaries to work hard.

The Lawmaker noted the scholarships had eased pressure on the National government constituency’s bursary fund, which, he noted was inadequate top carter for the increasing number of needy students.
